Japan has probably one of the most efficient public transportation systems in the world. Everything is practically accessible just by riding the bus or train. Some opt to use their own cars or bikes to go around, but for the majority – especially in Tokyo – buses and trains is their choice of transportation. The Narita International Airport and Haneda Airport are the two airports in Tokyo that have international flights going in and out of its premises. Getting yourself out of the airport when you land in Tokyo and exploring the city all by yourself is easy enough, even for a first-timer.
Probably the easiest and most convenient way of going out of the airport, and even making your way around Tokyo, is their complex subway system. While it is described as complex due to the number of connecting lines it has, it is actually very easy to navigate in the subway system once you figure out how the whole system works. Depending on what airport you are coming from, there are trains departing from the airports that can take you to other connecting subway lines and JR lines. If the luggage you’re bringing is the worry, the trains are spacious enough that you wouldn’t crowd the train too much – unless it’s rush hour.
If you don’t want to use the trains, you could always opt for the buses. In airports, there are airport limousine buses that people can use, which is quite pricey. However, if you want a cheaper option, there are also regular buses that pass by the airports. Buses are also a great way to explore Tokyo. They have buses that can drop you off at major points of the city, and for a much more convenient option, they also have sightseeing buses, and shuttle buses if you had any specific destinations in mind – like the Tokyo Skytree and Disney Resort.
If you do not want to use a bus or a train, you can always choose to ride a taxi. While much pricier compared to the trains and buses, it is much easier to transport your belongings, especially if you came from the airport or going to the airport. This is not usually a choice of transportation for many people due to its price and also the travel time as you could get to your destination faster by riding a train.
If you are not up to using Japan’s public transportation system, you could always choose to ride a bike. There are bicycle rental shops all over Tokyo if you are interested in exploring the city via bicycle. Going on a bike tour is not only fun but it’s a great way to see the city streets, especially streets small enough that only a bike or a person can go through.
There are many options to choose from when exploring Tokyo. Whether it be the bus, the trains, taxis, walking, or renting a bike. Just don’t forget to grab a map of the city before you head out of the airport!
